This past weekend saw the release of three major films: Disney’s Christopher Robin, The Spy Who Dumped Me, and The Darkest Minds.
At No. 1 is Mission: Impossible – Fallout with $35.0M, dropping only 42.8 percent from its opening weekend. Sure, the number itself isn’t absolutely amazing, but its high retention is proof of how good word-of-mouth is on this bad boy. As of this writing, it’s beating its predecessor at the domestic box-office by just under $20M. We’ll have to wait and see what international numbers look like, but when all said and done, this is setting itself up to be a big success.
In second place is Christopher Robin, which made $25M in its opening weekend. Since we don’t know the budget for this movie, it’s hard to tell whether or not this is actually good or bad, but the movie did perform under Box Office Mojo‘s expectation, so it’s likely not great. I personally think this is a movie that will ultimately have a longer tail in its home release, but only time will tell.
In third place is The Spy Who Dumped Me, which took in $12.4M in its opening weekend. It’s kind of a soft opening, and I think it’ll have a hard time making back its $40M budget in its theater run, but like many comedies, I think the home release will be incredibly important for them. As it stands, this one is shy of studio expectations, who were likely hoping for something closer to $15M.
