More Evidence That Dave Filoni Should Be In Charge Of Lucasfilm

Folks we have a Disney theatrical slate update from yesterday, and we're breaking it down, this is the Star Wars Edition.

I’ve said for quite some time that Dave Filoni should be in charge at Lucasfilm. The writer/director and showrunner of many Star Wars projects recently showed fans just why he should be leading the studio. Read on for more details.

The Star Wars prequel trilogy, is not good. Yet, there are many fans out there, who love the Clone Wars era of Star Wars. I think the popularity of this era comes more from the later seasons of The Clone Wars animated show, than it does the movies. Dave Filoni made many mistakes with The Clone Wars, especially in early seasons. However, as Filoni got more control and and his confidence with Star Wars increased, he proved he really understood the franchise. There are many story arcs in The Clone Wars which do a far better job of developing the characters of Anakin and Obi-Wan, than the movies did. Not to mention The Clone Wars also fills in a lot of nice little plot holes. Ultimately, I’d rather re-watch The Clone Wars than the prequel movies if given a choice, though I’d be selective with story arcs.

Filoni has also moved into live-action with Star Wars as an executive producer on The Mandalorian. Filoni also directed two episodes of The Mandalorian, and has confirmed he will direct an episode in Season 2 as well. However, Filoni was not really involved with any of the sequel trilogy movies, and for me, that was Disney’s big mistake. Star Wars needs someone in charge, making all the projects works together and maintaining a sense of canon and foresight. For me, the best person to do that role is Dave Filoni.

If you have been watching The Mandalorian documentary on Disney+, you’ve probably already been sold on Filoni’s passion for Star Wars. If not, then maybe the clip below will. In the video Filoni breaks down the importance of the Duel of the Fates fight in The Phantom Menace. Filoni explains how this moment is so pivotal for everything that comes after in Star Wars. He also perfectly describes the difference between the Jedi of the Clone Wars era, and how Luke is trained in the original trilogy. Check it out, courtesy of Adam Hlavac.

Why Filoni?

Dave Filoni should be in charge at Lucasfilm

The part of this video which speaks most to me is how Filoni describes the failure of the Jedi Order. He talks about how love, and having an attachment to others is important for a Jedi. How Yoda didn’t understand this in time to help Anakin, but he can pass it onto Luke. But, this also shows us how stupid that sequel trilogy really is. J.J. Abrams, nor Rian Johnson understood how Luke was supposed to rebuild the Jedi Order using the lessons of Qui Gon, and Yoda. What I expected to see in a Star Wars sequel was this very obvious change in the Jedi. I mean, the attachment to the living is what allows the Jedi to essentially be immortal, and denies the Sith the same gift.

The problem is that there is none of this in the sequel trilogy. There is no talk of the Jedi changing under Luke, because Luke is a broken man, off muttering to himself about how the Jedi Order failed. Which, by the way shows that Rian Johnson didn’t understand this story thread in the way Filoni does. Filoni also set up the potential for a sequel to the Star Wars main saga. Luke could, and should have been training the likes of Ahsoka, Ezra, and others post-Return of the Jedi.

Filoni > KennedyDave Filoni should be in charge at Lucasfilm

All of Filoni’s set-up was ignored, and instead Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy allowed J.J. Abrams do do his own thing, which was just copy the original trilogy. Kennedy then allowed Johnson to do whatever he wanted, before rounding it off by allowing Abrams to do his own thing, again. What we have left, is the most disjointed and nonsensical parts of Star Wars as a whole. Those sequels are certainly ‘better-made’ movies than the prequels, but they simply don’t ‘fit’ with any of the other material.

Disney, it’s time to bite the bullet and put Filoni in charge. We can’t erase the sequel trilogy, but maybe in years to come Filoni will be able to salvage it by filling in some of the gaps? Either way, Filoni shows me in this video clip that he understands what Star Wars is truly about. Certainly, Filoni’s knowledge is greater than any of the people who worked on the sequel films showed.

What do you think of Filoni’s analysis? Do you agree with me that Dave Filoni should be in charge at Lucasfilm? Leave your thoughts below as always.
