The Mortal Kombat franchise has spanned the better part of 30 years. And as such its winding and complex canon features many kharacters. Too many to give them all even a little bit of screen time in a feature film.
I’m sure some fans noticed their favorite fighter was absent from the recently released trailer. Like with most any movie, for one reason or another some kharacters made the cut, while others weren’t so lucky. Producer Todd Garner did explain why one, in particular, the ninja known as Rain, was removed from the film. You can check out what he had to say while speaking with ComicBook.com below.
“So we pulled characters out early, just because it felt like Rain was in the movie for a second. But Reptile’s sort of like Rain and so it’s like… And that was just a weird fight […] So we had to pull that character out, which is like, that wouldn’t have been a [main] character anyway. So things like that are like, ‘Are we just doubling down on the same thing, or repeating ourselves just for the sake of it?'”

The three MK fans who hold Rain as their favorite kharacter will surely be disappointed. Rain is without a doubt one of the more formidable ninjas in Mortal Kombat. However, I don’t think his inclusion in the first film is necessary. Though I’d be happy to have him if and when a sequel is made.
Garner also said that Rain could show up in a possible sequel (the outlet notes he could have been joking). While it’s probably too early to make a call, from the trailer, I think a sequel is likely. The original Mortal Kombat film was given a sequel and it was awful.
Below you can find an official synopsis for Mortal Kombat.
“MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?”
