Sonic the Hedgehog is the top superhero film of 2020.

2020 has been… a year to say the least. The majority of us can’t wait to get it over with. Lots of tragic events and lots of strange ones as well. Theaters have been greatly affected by the pandemic as they were forced to shut down. This in turn forced studios to push films farther and farther back. Superhero films like Black Widow and The Eternals have been taken off the 2020 slate.

These changes caused an unexpected film at the top of the highest-grossing superhero film chart via Comic Book Resources. The last superhero movie to claim that spot that wasn’t from Marvel was The Dark Knight with $1.004 billion in 2008. Now in 2020, the superhero to finally dethrone Marvel is… Sonic the Hedgehog?

That is right ladies and gentlemen, Sonic the Hedgehog has claimed the top spot with $306.7 million worldwide box office gross. It even sped by Warner Bros.’ Birds of Prey which brought in about $201 million. Of course, this top spot comes with the major 2020 asterisk, but the top spot is the top spot.

It is also interesting to note that Sonic is the highest-grossing video game film to date. This has led to the development of a sequel that is scheduled to debut in April of 2022. The film was directed by Jeff Fowler. It stars Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, James Marsden, Neal McDonald, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally, and Natasha Rothwell.

What makes this story interesting is the fact that this film was ripped apart by everyone when we first got a look at Sonic. The design of the character was all wrong. For that reason, they delayed the release and took the time to redesign Sonic. Now asterisk or not it sits at the top of the chart.
