Mr. Mercedes‘ elevator pitch is something that feels pulled right out of a modern headline. The series (along with its source material) starts off with a vehicle running down a group of people in cold blood. It’s a scene that could very well have been played up in terms of its approach, but that isn’t what they wanted to do with their violence, executive producer and director Jack Bender explained during a roundtable for the show’s second season at San Diego Comic-Con.
The question came about when one reporter asked whether or not we can expect the same gruesome nature out of the show in the second season:
“Yes, I’d say so. Trying not to exploit, exaggerate. From the first massacre, the way I did it was no action music, no slow motion. I don’t want to amplify any of this, I just want it to feel like God forbid if you were there, what would it feel like? What would it look like? That’s been the approach for the whole show.”

So, for Season 2, it looks like we can expect more of the Stephen King-ian tone, with few punches being pulled in regards to the aforementioned violence, but at the same time, in order to maintain the integrity of the impact, it sounds like they’ll continue to try and make things as grounded as possible.
