Ms Marvel Season 2 On Hold Till The Marvels Hits Says Directors

Ms Marvel Season 2 is on hold until The Marvels hits theaters says the shows directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah in a recent interview.

A Ms Marvel Season 2 is on hold until The Marvels hits theaters says the shows directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah in a recent interview. Speaking with The Playlist recently El Arbi and Fallah were asked about Ms Marvel Season 2. As you’ll see from the quotes below, they are waiting to see what happens with The Marvels.

“No, we’re waiting for ‘The Marvels,’ so that will decide what the next step will be,” said El Arbi. “So we’re very much looking forward to that. I can’t wait to see it, man. It’s great to see the trailers and to see the whole family back there and Iman Vellani doing great work, so looking forward to that.”

However, if Ms Marvel Season 2 does not happen, they will certainly look for more opportunities to work in the MCU.

“Well, you know, if they ask us to come back to ‘Ms. Marvel,’ we love the universe, we love those characters, and Iman, and all of the other supporting actors there, so it would be an honor to come back and explore some more,” said El Arbi. “There is a Moroccan superhero we forgot to name that exists, so we can go there. And, you know, we love ‘Blade.’ Our buddy Yann Demange is now doing ‘Blade.’ If Yann doesn’t want to do the second movie, we’re still there. And ‘Deadpool’ – we’re always there for ‘Deadpool.’ If there’s a fourth one, we’re also game, so if they call us, we’re good.”

Analysis

The question is, will Ms Marvel Season 2 be determined by how much profit is made by The Marvels? Is Ms Marvel on hold until The Marvels so they can see how audiences react? If so, making that profit may be easier than we thought. According to a recent piece by Vanity Fair on The Marvels director Nia Da Costa, the budget of The Marvels was around $130M. That’s no small number, but I also think you can likely guess this is low for the average Marvel movie.

Marketing is tough right now given the strikes. If Disney decide to spend less on marketing and hope the MCU brand and word of mouth attracts viewers, then the movie could make a profit fairly quickly. On average a movie’s budget is about equal to what is spent on marketing. So, if the budget is $130M then the marketing budget would be roughly around that, normally. Unless the strikes lift though, actors and writers can’t really promote the movie. We are also at a point where there are very few movies releasing, with so many being delayed and held back. If Disney could for example manage to only spend $70M on marketing then The Marvels would only have to make $200M (to Disney, not theatres) to start turning a profit.

If it was a DC movie, that’s unlikely. However, very few Marvel movies have failed to make more than The Marvels would need. Surely another factor is purely business? Streaming shows don’t make money, so would a Ms Marvel movie make more sense than a Season 2? Could the budget be reduced to make a Season 2 more profitable? These are not decisions that Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah would be involved with, but they matter..

I guess we’ll have to wait and see. For now, lets see how fans take to The Marvels. If the reaction is positive then that’s one step at least closer to a Ms Marvel Season 2. Only one step closer mind.
