Mulan Plagued By Controversy And Negativity

Mulan

If it’s not one thing it’s another for Disney’s live-action version of the beloved aminated classic Mulan. If the shutdown of movie theaters around the globe wasn’t enough the film has also been a source of controversy. Our story begins back in August

First, there was the social media post by lead actress Liu Yifei, where she supported the Hong Kong police last August. This outraged many pro-democracy activists that have repeatedly accused police in the region of using excessive force. Up until the release this was the main reason why there was a large movement of people around the world urging people to boycott Mulan.

Then after it was released a new controversy arose from the credits of the film. During the end credits of the film, it was noted that part of the film was shot in Xinjiang, China. It also included thanks to the authorities of the area. The problem? This region of China has almost 1 million Muslim-minority Uighurs that are housed in what the Chinese government calls “voluntary reeducation centers”.

This Chinese clampdown on Muslims in the area has been criticized by many governments, including the United States, as well as human rights groups. Two Republican senators have even come out and criticized Disney for their choice to film there. With this news spreading far and wide, now the movement to boycott the film has gained more steam.

Due to all of these negativity reports like from CNBC has emerged that Chinese authorities have told major media outlets not to cover the release of Mulan. Which is set to be released in theaters this weekend. The more noise this makes, the more they feel they would be pressured into maybe having to talk about the issue at its core.

The other problem Mulan is facing is that a lot of critics are not being very nice to the film. Giving it lack-luster ratings. Not to mention audience scores that haven’t won the film any points. Will all that said, this weekend’s China opening could be a disaster.
