There’s a lot at stake for Vampiro, the wrestling superstar and Lucha Libre legend. Nail In The Coffin: The Fall And Rise Of Vampiro shows Vampiro aka Ian Hodgkinson wrestle in the ring and also wrestle with his personal demons. This documentary tells the story of hope, family, and perseverance all while showing a behind the scenes look at the grim realities of professional wrestling. Now semi-retired from the ring and riddled with arthritis, he spends his time commuting from Canada to Mexico and Los Angeles to work with up-and-coming talent and direct matches for Lucha Libre and Lucha Underground. Despite this busy schedule and all the aches and pains, Hodgkinson still makes time to raise his teenage daughter.
Nail In The Coffin: The Fall And Rise of Vampiro is a documentary you can really sink your teeth into. It tells the story of his early beginnings in Canada where he started his career as a punk rock kid and hockey player. After his move to Los Angeles he became bodyguard for the pop group Milli Vanilla. He then relocated to Mexico where he quickly became a sex symbol and a braided hair, face painted, wrestling legend. After many championships in the ring in Latin America he ventured to the United States and got his big break (literally) wrestling for WCW. Here he broke the mold of traditional wrestling and incorporated his passion for rock ‘n’ roll music into his matches.
Michael Paszt (Turbo Kid) makes his directorial debut with Nail in the Coffin: The Fall and Rise of Vampiro. Paszt and Hangar 18 Media produce the film along with Bruno Marino and Pasha Patriki from Red Square Motion and 9 Light Entertainment. Raven Banner Entertainment takes on the role of distributer for this feature. Visit the Epic Pictures website to pre-order the Blu-ray now. This documentary hits select theaters September 4th and is officially available on streaming platforms starting September 8th.
Ian Hodgkinson, writer/director Michael Paszt, and I connected for an interview via Zoom. They told me how they came together to make this inspiring documentary about Vampiro’s career and his love for his daughter. Hodgkinson talked about his life in the ring and his time as a pro wrestler. He also revealed an upcoming TV series that will take him on the road and chatted about the benefits of medicinal marijuana as well as the classic vampire flick The Lost Boys. Lastly, he discussed his match with Hulk Hogan and the dirty politics of the wrestling industry. Beware of this interview with charismatic wrestling icon and Lucha Libre star, Vampiro!
