In entertainment we often find ourselves romanticizing the dangerous worlds of criminal activity that we wouldn’t last a day in. A few perfect examples are the gunslingers in the westerns and those adventurous pirates sailing the seas. Most recently the world has been fascinated by the Colombian and Mexican drug trade. Films and series, which include soap operas, fill the airwaves with names like Pablo Escobar and El Chapo Guzman. One of these popular series can be found on Netflix. The first was Narcos and for two seasons now it has shifted over to Narcos: Mexico.
The last season of Narcos: Mexico was released this year in mid-February, you know when things were relatively normal? Today Netflix has confirmed that there will be a third season to the series. With the announcement came a short teaser video that you can check out below!

They also announced that after five seasons on Narcos, showrunner Eric Newman will hand over the showrunning duties to co-creator and collaborator Carlo Bernard. Newman has a busy schedule thanks to his overall deal with Netflix on both the features side and television side. He will continue to work on a broadening Netflix slate. This includes the previously announced opioid TV drama Painkiller, Escape From Spiderhead starring Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller, and The Upper World starring Daniel Kaluuya. Newman will continue to executive produce alongside Bernard and Jose Padilha on Narcos: Mexico.
Another familiar name will be featured in the series. Wagner Moura, who starred as Pablo Escobar during the first two seasons of Narcos. But he will be behind the camera directing two episodes in the upcoming season. Newman commented about his time on Narcos and on Bernard taking over.
“I am grateful for my five years at the helm of Narcos and Narcos: Mexico and am immensely proud of what this spectacular team has achieved with these shows. Carlo Bernard is the first person I ever spoke to about this project, over ten years ago, and I am extremely pleased to leave the steering of Season 3 of Narcos: Mexico in his very capable hands,” said Newman.
Here is the synopsis for season 3 of the series:
Set in the 90s, when the globalization of the drug business ignites, Season 3 examines the war that breaks out after Felix’s empire splinters. As newly independent cartels struggle to survive political upheaval and escalating violence, a new generation of Mexican kingpins emerge. But in this war, truth is the first casualty – and every arrest, murder and take-down only pushes real victory further away…
This has been a very good series with an amazing cast. I look forward to seeing what they have in store for the next season of Narcos: Mexico. I am excited to see how the next season develops with a new showrunner. Have you enjoyed Narcos so far? Let us know in the comment section below!
