The Cancer plot for Thor: Love and Thunder has long been rumored and speculated upon. It’s pretty obvious why this plot has been thought to be part of the fourth Thor movie. Jane Foster will become Thor herself in the movie. We’ve known this detail ever since the movie was first announced at last years SDCC. Since Jane is going to become Thor, we have to look at the comic titles for inspiration. Thus, the Cancer plot.
In the comics Jane was battling Cancer in Human form whilst wielding Mjolnir as Thor. This was the story arc of the ‘Mighty Thor’ graphic novel. Though even when director Taiki Waititi addressed this earlier this year, he was non-committal on the Cancer part of the plot. Though, he did seem keen to go that direction if possible. Waititi must have worked it out, because in a recent interview with Yahoo Life, Natalie Portman who plays Jane confirmed it.
“I can’t tell you that much, I’m really excited. I’m starting to train, to get muscles. If there can be all these female superheroes, the more of them they are, the better it is. I’m trying to think — it’s based on the graphic novel of the Mighty Thor. She’s going through cancer treatment and is a superhero on the side.”

How this all comes about, who knows? Jane has been absent from the MCU for some time, barring a small cameo appearance in Avengers: Endgame using old footage. Last we saw of Thor, he was heading off into parts unknown with the Guardians of the Galaxy. So how Thor ends up back on Earth, and Jane ends up with his powers and her own Hammer (or Mjolnir) remains to be seen.
What I do know, is that I love Waititi’s style, and I loved Thor: Ragnarok. Oh and remember Waititi did confirm Space Sharks, so this one is gonna be crazy fun. are you happy to have the Cancer plot for Thor: Love and Thunder?
