Former Congresswoman Jackie Speier would never have imagined she would be at the traumatic event of the largest cult massacre in United States history with the Jonestown event decades again. In the National Geographic series Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown, she was willing to speak and retrace the moments as a Congressional aide to Leo Ryan and living with the aftermath.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with Jackie Speier on talking about her experiences and living with the trauma decades after the incident.

Jackie Speier is a former U.S. representative for California’s 14^th congressional district from 2008 to 2023. Also, she served as a member of the California State Senate for parts of San Francisco and San Mateo. In 1978, she served as an aide to Congressman Leo Ryan, who was assassinated during the Jonestown massacre under orders from cult leader Jim Jones. She survived the massacre with five gunshot wounds.
