NBCU Exec Says Battlestar Galactica Reboot ‘Progressing Nicely’

When I first heard there was a Battlestar Galactica reboot coming, I was a little surprised. On one hand my thoughts went to how recent we had a rebooted series. The Ronald D. Moore led reboot ran from 2004-2009 and was pretty well received by critics and fans alike. The idea of rebooting the show after only 11 years off the air seems, too soon. Saying that, this is TV land, and when the lack of original concepts takes hold, it’s usually time for a reboot.

I could think of worse shows to reboot that Battlestar Galactica. However, there is always the danger that this new show simply won’t be as well received as the previous show was. Battlestar Galactica (2004) had one of the best episodes of TV I’ve ever seen in ’33 minutes’. Maybe the ending of Battlestar 2004 was a little bit too smart for its own good, and tried to leave viewers with a ‘whoah’ moment that never really landed for me. Overall though, Battlestar Galactica (2004) was a great show.

The Battlestar Galactica reboot is happening over at NBCU’s Peacock streaming service. Recently Bill McGoldrick, president of original content spoke to Deadline. McGoldrick appears to be very happy with the project which is being led by Drummer Girl showrunner Michael Lesslie.

“I have seen an outline that we’re excited about,” he said.” “It’s obviously a big undertaking and we’re aware of the importance of that IP and we’re being pretty deliberate but it’s progressing nicely.”

McGoldrick admitted that Battlestar Galactica “comes with a great deal of responsibility” and “we want to do it great service”.

Battlestar Galactica reboot

Sam Esmail (Mr Robot) is exec producer on the show after he struck a big deal overall with NBCU last year. I have never seen Drummer Girl, but I know Mr Robot is a show worthy of praise even though I have not finished it all yet. I like the Battlestar Galactica IP,  even though the original was a bit of a Star Wars rip off. However, the 2004 reboot took those unique elements from the original series and turned them into a quality IP.

I just hope we don’t get some lame 24 episode low budget network TV show. I want something shorter and higher budget. Not seasons worth of filler that go nowhere. I guess we shall have to wait and see, but the fact this is coming on Peacock is hopeful? There is currently no writers room active for this show, though Deadline anticipates this will happen soon. It’ll therefore be a while before we hear any concrete details about casting, setting, or even potential filming dates.

Are you happy that the Battlestar Galactica reboot is ‘progressing nicely’ or would you rather it was left alone for a while longer? Let us know any thoughts you have in the usual spot below.
