How do you get the kids to read the classicss such as Jack London’s White Fang? Make an animated version of it, of course. Netflix just paid seven figures to acquire this impressive looking feature, which debuted at the recent Sundance Film Festival.
The film focuses on a wild wolf-dog’s journey from sled-pulling in the Yukon and Northwest territories to domesticity. White Fang was originally written by London in 1906 (it was serialized in Outing magazine); the story is a companion work to The Call of the Wild. Don’t say you never learned anything reading stuff at LRM!

The animation style in White Fang — a blend of 3D motion capture and painterly textures — might not be for everyone. It’s somewhat akin to Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly, which is far afield from Pixar and Disney animation styles. Personally, I think it’s beautiful (and I’m not a huge animation fan… but I do like the classics).
Netflix and the filmmakers released a joint statement, according to Deadline:
“We always wanted to bring this timeless and thrilling adventure story to as wide an audience as possible and Netflix’s expansive reach gives us that opportunity. Their passion for the film and commitment to its success is more than anything we could hope for.”
White Fang is directed by Oscar winner Alexandre Espigares (9, Mr. Hublot), with a stellar voice cast, including Nick Offerman, Rashida Jones, Paul Giamatti, and Eddie Spears. Dominique Monfery, Philippe Lioret, Serge Frydman wrote the script, based on the classic fiction by Jack London.
Netflix hasn’t released an official date yet, but White Fang will join their expanding stable of original animation features, including BoJack Horseman, Castlevania, and Big Mouth. Most of Netflix’s original animation content to-date is 2D, so White Fang seems like a nice way to introduce 3D into the mix.
