Netflix Announces A SECOND He-Man Animated Series

As we learned some months ago, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot writer-director Kevin Smith is hard at work on a continuation of the He-Man animated series in the form of Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Details are sparse on that one, but Smith promises it won’t be a series through his own lens, but rather a legit spiritual continuation of the old show.

But, Netflix has now announced a new show from them and Mattel, and in this series, they will be utilizing CG animation, as opposed to standard 2D animation for Smith’s show.

“Masters of the Universe is one of the most iconic global franchises of all time, with a 30-year history and a passionate fan base,” Mattel’s Senior VP of Content Distribution and Business Development, Fred Soulie, said in a statement. “The entire team at Mattel is excited to introduce the world of He-Man to a new generation and, together with the talented team at Netflix, to reimagine the classic characters in a way that appeals to kids and families today, while also resonating with the fans who grew up with them.”

Below is the synopsis for the new show:

“On the planet of Eternia, a young lost prince discovers the powers of Grayskull and transforms into He-Man, Master of the Universe! The classic battle between He-Man and evil Skeletor rages to new heights as both hero and villain forge new and mighty teams. A new generation of heroes fighting for the fate of us all. In the end, who will become MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE?”

So, how is this different from Smith’s series? While Smith’s picks up from where the other cartoon left off, this one is kind of a reboot and reimagining of the original material. So, in a way, Netflix is eating their cake and having it too.
