With K-Pop popularity rising in the past few years, the eventuality is to create a global singing group that appeals worldwide. Netflix announced an untitled documentary series following a group of girls that will be the next singing sensation of the world.

For now, HYBE x Geffen Records revealed 20 contestants worldwide competing for a spot in the first-ever HYBE x Geffen Records girl group.

It will be the first time that a U.S. record label and K-Pop entertainment company are uniting their combined expertise for the discovery and development of a girl group from ground zero.

“I have wanted to form an international group based on K-Pop methodology for a while. To do this, I believed we needed a capable partner. When I met John (Janick), from the first moment, we both felt instantly that we had a connection, musically and creatively,” said Bang Si-Hyuk, chairman of HYBE, at a joint press conference today. “I am very proud of the rich history we have made and the tremendous talent we have found. I am proud of the opportunities we have created within the K-Pop universe.”

At this moment, the 20 aspiring artists will participate in the world-class audition program titled The Debut: Dream Academy. The content premieres on September 1st at 8 a.m. US PDT on YouTube (global) and ABEMA (Japan). This series follows the contestants during the audition program. At the end of this program, the final members of the group will be determined, as well as the group’s name.

John Janick, chairman and CEO of Interscope Geffen A&M, added at the press conference, “Since we began our partnership two years ago, Bang and I have often spoke about our shared beliefs in artist development, music and creativity. To develop a global group with Bang, with the best of K-Pop methodology, and our Geffen team, is truly special and will bring to life a first-of-its kind experience in music. Each candidate is incredibly talented, dedicated, and driven, making this an exciting moment for music fans around the world.”

As for the upcoming Netflix documentary series of the unnamed girl group, Nadia Hallgren will helm the series. She was previously the director of the four-time Emmy-nominated series Becoming on Netflix.

The docuseries is set to premiere sometime next year.
