Netflix Is Set To Join The Motion Picture Association of America

Since starting as a DVD by mail service back in the late 1990s, the company has grown into something no one could have imagined, lately becoming a major player with their original content. Having a Netflix subscription these days is about as common as having wifi, the access to films and television shows has almost become a standard of living.

Now the company is set to join the Motion Picture Association of America. The organization was founded long ago back in 1922, and begun as a way to keep the industry viable, but over the past few years has been hard at work to reduce piracy. The news was announced on today. Below you can check out an excerpt from a statement by MPAA President and CEO Charlies Rivkin.

“On behalf of the MPAA and its member companies, I am delighted to welcome Netflix as a partner. All of our members are committed to pushing the film and television industry forward, in both how we tell stories and how we reach audiences. Adding Netflix will allow us to even more effectively advocate for the global community of creative storytellers, and I look forward to seeing what we can all achieve together.”

Chief content officer Ted Sarandos:

“Joining the Motion Picture Association further exemplifies our commitment to ensuring the vibrancy of these creative industries and the many talented people who work in them all over the world. We look forward to supporting the association team and their important efforts.”

Well, this makes sense as Netflix has more or less become a studio now as well as one of the largest streaming platforms on the planet, even garnering their first Oscar nomination this year for the film Roma. Netflix continues to chart new territory within the industry and likely will for some time.
