Netflix May Be Losing The Office And Friends, But They’ve Just Gained Seinfeld

Right now, some streaming services are dropping billions of dollars to lock down some of the big pieces of comfort entertainment. Friends is headed to HBO Max next year, and The Office will be headed to whatever the hell Comcast’s streaming service is in 2021. That’s not even to mention the $1.5 billion that HBO Max could pay for The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men.

Clearly, these sitcoms have proven themselves as timeless commodities. In the era of binging, these long-running shows have proven to be the types of shows that subscribers watch on repeat as forms of comfort, and with everything peeling away from Netflix, they were in need of a huge get to help retain subscribers in this new era of streaming.

The L.A. Times is reporting that Netflix has landed five-year worldwide rights to the hit series Seinfeld, starting in 2021, when its Hulu rights expire. This is iconic because it will be the first time worldwide rights will have been acquired by one company, as Amazon had the rights in most other non-U.S. territories.

“Seinfeld is the television comedy that all television comedy is measured against,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “It is as fresh and funny as ever, and will be available to the world in 4K for the first time. We can’t wait to welcome Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer to their new global home on Netflix.”

Sony Pictures Television chairman Mike Hopkins added: “Seinfeld is a one-of-a-kind, iconic, culture-defining show. Now, 30 years after its premiere, Seinfeld remains center stage. We’re thrilled to be partnering with Netflix to bring this beloved series to current fans and new audiences around the globe.”
