Avengers: Endgame Director Calls Sony Pulling Spider-Man From MCU A ‘Tragic Mistake’

What If...? will feature Spider-Man

Not a lot has changed in the weeks since it was reported that Spider-Man would likely not be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sure, there have been some uncredible reports of a potential light at the end of the tunnel, but as things stand, it sounds like Spider-Man is walking off into the proverbial sunset, away from the MCU and into his own Spider-Verse that consists of the likes of Venom and Morbius.

There have been plenty of online speculators that have predicted this move from Sony, including our own Kyle Malone, who thinks the studio has gotten too confident for its own good. Personally, I think the studio has gotten a bad rap and like the fact that they stood up to the reported ridiculous terms from the House of Mouse (that being said, if that initial 30% offer was real, this is indeed a huge mistake).

But what does someone of actual importance think of this whole thing? Speaking with the Toronto Sun, Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo had a pretty harsh stance.

“[The initial deal between Disney and Sony] was a tenuous, fraught union throughout the whole process. But, I will say, stepping back and trying to be objective as possible, that I think it’s a tragic mistake on Sony’s part to think that they can replicate [Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige]’s penchant for telling incredible stories and the amazing success he has had over the years. I think it’s a big mistake.”

And I can definitely see where he’s coming from here. Feige, after all, has an unprecedented track record. With 23 critically-acclaimed movies under his belt, and not a TRUE stinker among them (though not all are great), it’s proof that his guidance is no fluke.

Sony, on the other hand, has a history of getting overly hands-on and trying too hard to get to that finish line (e.g. The Amazing Spider-Man 2). I’d like to think they’ve learned their lessons from their mistakes and have even learned to trust their creative staff with films like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but only time will tell if this really is a mistake.
