Netflix Originals Are Thriving As Disney Nears the Exit From the Streaming Service

We all made fun of Netflix. Okay, maybe we didn’t make fun of them, but way back in the early 2010s when they made it known they’d be getting into the original content territory, there were more than a few skeptics. Many felt they signed onto Netflix for studio films and network TV, not for whatever “lowgrade” garbage the streaming service was going to spew out. We simply couldn’t fathom that streaming service content could mean high-quality content.

It’s now 2018, and we’ve all done an about-face. Now, when we think of amazing TV, we think of Netflix, along with other cable networks like HBO. Additionally, Netflix has spent a whole lot of money on original films, and while they aren’t necessarily killing it like they are with TV, they do seem to be doing pretty well in terms of numbers with their films, and who knows, maybe this year will see their first Oscar-winning movie in Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma.

And this success has never been more important. Disney is slowly exiting the platform, and at this time next year, we’ll be enjoying their branded content on a new streaming service of their own. Netflix has been pouring in billions of dollars of resources into original content…and is it doing the job? According to a new report from 7Park Data (via TheWrap), Netflix original account for 37 percent of their streaming traffic as of this past October, which is up 14 percent from October of last year. Additionally, six of the 10 top shows on the platforms are originals.

And it makes sense. Networks and studios have slowly been migrating their content to other services like Hulu (like Fox, which accounted for 21% of U.S. streams last year and currently accounts for 4%).

The big test will be when WarnerMedia and Disney both launch their services. Will the overall subscriber numbers continue to grow over at Netflix, or will they even out and even dwindle as consumers begin to make tough decisions about their ever-growing list of streaming services to subscribe to?
