Netflix’s controversial smash hit series 13 Reasons Why will return this month with its third season. The streaming service released the official trailer for the upcoming season early Thursday morning. Click the link above to get an idea of what is to come in the third chapter of this captivating series.[The following contains SPOILERS for the previous seasons. Be warned.]
Based off of the 2007 novel by Jay Asher, the first season focused on high school student Clay (Dylan Minnette) who has been handed a box of audio tapes recorded by his crush, Hannah (Katherine Langford). The tapes feature Hannah documenting the events in her life that lead to her taking her own life—which she did before the tapes were released. One of those events is a rape committed by Bryce Walker (Justin Prentice), the popular athlete at the school. Season two focuses on a civil suit Hannah’s mother (played by Kate Walsh) brings against the school, the secret rape culture that exists there, and how Hannah was not the only girl to be victimized by Bryce.
As the season three trailer suggests, it seems someone has taken justice into their own hands against Bryce. With the Hannah story angle reaching its conclusion in the previous season, it will be interesting to see if the show transitions from a mystery containing suicide and mental health elements into what could be more of a murder mystery. Additionally, while Hannah’s story is over, there are still plenty of lingering hostilities and injustices committed that could influence a number of characters this season—including drug addiction, infidelity, and a violent sexual assault that nearly lead to a school dance shooting.
