Yesterday, I reported on some potential developments over at Netflix — more specifically, them mulling over the idea of releasing some of their films in theaters ahead of their digital releases on their streaming service. This was in attempts to qualify for awards for the upcoming awards season — and to possibly overcome some of the snobbery inherent in the different organizations.
However, it’s worth noting that this news I’m about to share regarding Netflix setting theatrical dates for their films isn’t really a new thing, as they’ve been doing this every year since Beasts of No Nation. When it will be a big deal is when there’s a sizable gap between its digital and theatrical release — so we’ll have to wait on that front.

However, if you were hoping to check out some of their awards contenders in theaters, here’s what they have in store.
22 July (directed by Paul Greengrass ) – October 10
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (directed by Joel and Ethan Coen) – November 16
Roma (directed by Alfonso Cuarón) – December 14
These films will play in 10 to 12 theater locations — largely at Landmark Theatres locations. There’s even buzz that Roma could get a two-week run, not just a one-week run like the others.
These films’ stream dates are still up in the air and rest assured we’ll update you when it happens, as if there is a year they’d break down and be a bit more flexible, this would be it, as this is the year they’re shooting for credibility in the film circles.
