Here in the States, we have a real love-hate relationship with animation — or at least the mainstream public does. Yes, we love our Pixars and our Disneys, but by and large, animated shows or films can only be aimed at families, kids, and adults. In a medium where virtually anything is possible, that middle area that ranges from 13 to 35-year-olds is kind of left out. Sure, they can enjoy these shows and films, but there is rarely anything aimed directly at them.
It’s because of that that shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra were such breaths of fresh air. We get wonderful adventure stories that could appeal to a much more narrow and geek-specific demographic, and that’s okay.
Now, it looks like Avatar head writer has a brand-new series coming from Netflix called The Dragon Prince, and the streaming service took an opportunity to show off a new poster.
“Avatar: The Last Airbender headwriter Aaron Ehasz has paired with Netflix for #TheDragonPrince, a new animated series about two human princes who forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands.”
As a lover of fantasy, I am already sold on this aesthetic. Now let’s hope they allow themselves to be aged up ever-so-slightly from Avatar and Korra, as I can stand an animated series without the fart jokes.
