I usually don’t give much thought to working titles. They may give some hints of what’s to come in a project, but can also be completely unrelated in every way. More than anything, they’re a way for studios to identify a project without fully committing to an actual title — though there have been occasions where films with actual titles still pick up a working title, for one reason or another.

However, this particular news item did catch my attention. I’m talking about Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of the anime series Cowboy Bebop. According to the latest issue of Production Weekly (via ComicBook.com), the working title for the film is Jazz Band.

So, why is that important? Well, if fans know anything about the original series, it’s that it’s characterized by its jazz-influenced score and opening. They could get a lot of things wrong about the live-action series, but if they got that jazz score right, there would still be a lot of happy fans.

Admittedly, this production title does come weeks after John Cho, the star of the series, was injured on set. Rather than recast the role, the production decided to wait until he’s fully recovered. While there is no official word yet on when that may be, it is speculated that the delay could last seven to nine months.
