What a Pokéweek it is for fans of the long-running multimedia franchise. First, we got the first trailer for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, starring Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds, and tomorrow, gamers will be able to pick up their copy of the new game Pokémon: Let’s Go (I already have my copy of Eevee downloaded and ready to go on my Switch). So enthusiasm for the franchise is definitely at a high.
On the heels of the trailer release, we have a couple of scene descriptions from IGN, giving us some extra insight between the human lead Tim and Detective Pikachu himself. The first scene shows off the characters discussing the film’s central mystery: Tim thinks his father is dead, but Pikachu seems to think he’s alive. The scene takes place in a coffee shop, which the outlet speculates is taking the place the usual seedy bar a mystery story would take place in, which is a nice touch. They also highlight the antagonistic relationship between the two, and they really seem to enjoy the chemistry Smith and Reynolds have.

The second scene takes place in Tim’s apartment, and in seemingly hilarious fashion, Pikachu has turned it into a conspiracy theorist lair, with strands of yarn being strung between newspaper clippings across the entire living room. Pikachu also seems to be high on caffeine, with cups of coffee littering the floor. Again, they highlight the relationship between the two, which will make up the bread and butter of the story.
On the whole, I really like that the scenes they’re showing put our two leads front-and-center. It really shows that they understand what the heart of this story is and that it needs to be executed well in order to work. Thank goodness the talented Nicole Perlman and Rob Letterman are behind it (though what happened to Alex Hirsch?), so I have faith they can nail it. What do you think of the descriptions?
