New Game Of Thrones Prequel Covering Aegon’s Conquest In Development At HBO

It seems a NEW Game of Thrones prequel series covering Aegon's Conquest is in development at HBO. Check it out.

It seems a NEW Game of Thrones prequel series covering Aegon’s Conquest is in development at HBO. After the ending of Game of Thrones several other spin-off series have been in development, However only one so far has hit TV screens. House of the Dragon is set several hundred years prior to Game of Thrones with Season 2 is coming this year. However, that show is only expected to last 3/4 seasons, given the current pace of story.

As for what comes next? we know A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is also in development as a live-action series. That series is based on GRRM’s Hedge Knight stories (Dunk and Egg). However like parent series A Song of Ice and Fire, those are incomplete. There was a Snow series in early development that would have been a sequel. However that one seems on the backburner for now.

Now THR reports another prequel series is in development that will cover Aegon’s Conquest. This if course is set many hundreds of years again prior to House of the Dragon and deals with the Targaryen’s initial conquest of Westeros using their dragons.

‘HBO is developing another Game of Thrones spinoff series. The company is actively heating up its long-in-discussion Aegon’s Conquest idea.’

‘HBO is partnering with Mattson Tomlin, an in-demand scribe who did uncredited work on Matt Reeve’s The Batman and is co-writing its upcoming sequel The Batman Part II. He also wrote the Keanu Reeves action comic adaptation BRZRKR and an animated Terminator series which he is also showrunning for Netflix.’

‘One source described the project as taking a “back to basics” approach to George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy universe (though considering the first series was sprawling and complex, it’s unclear what “back to basics” means, exactly, in the Thrones context). Variety previously reported Aegon’s Conquest as an idea in discussion early last year.’

This story seems an obvious choice on paper. It’s the key event which shaped the Westeros politics. The Targaryen’s who kept to themselves on Dragonstone launch an unexpected conquest of the rest of Westeros. The conquest relied mostly on the power of the dragons ridden by Aegon and his two sister wives Rhaenys and Visenya. Aegon’s own dragon Balerion the dread was the biggest to exist in the recorded history’s (of Westeros) and survived until the reign of Visery’s (in House of the Dragon.) Fans have always wanted to see this guy realized in live-action. They may get their wish.

I say may because this does not say the show has been given a greenlight. Unlike House of the Dragon or A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Therefore, like Snow, development on this one could stall. However, given the material around these events, there is definitely scope for two – four seasons. Whereas Snow would require a brand new story to be imagined.

Like HotD it will depend how good the writing is on this show. Especially how they fill in the gaps in lore with actual drama and real people. So far, I have no reason to doubt they’ll pull it off though.
