Who knows where Ghostbusters’ place in pop culture would be today had it not been for The Real Ghostbusters? The massive success of the Saturday morning cartoon on ABC from 1986 to 1991 created a generation of fans worldwide. Between the classic Kenner toy line, a comic book run with NOW Comics, and even Slimer getting a spinoff show, The Real Ghostbusters sometimes exceeded the live-action movies in ways its creators never envisioned.
Following the recent releases Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Netflix is bringing back the crew for a new 3D animated series. Per Variety, Elliott Kalan of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart has been announced as the series’ head writer. Additionally, Kalan will serve as co-executive producer alongside the recent installments’ filmmakers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan. The yet-to-be-titled animated Ghostbusters is a co-production of Sony Pictures Animation, Netflix, and Ghost Corps, Inc.
Sony announced the animated Ghostbusters series along with an animated feature film during Ghostbusters Day in 2022. It is unknown if the series will be connected to The Real Ghostbusters and its short-lived sequel Extreme Ghostbusters. In March, however, Frozen Empire director Kenan appeared on A Trip to the Movies with Alex Zane to give his thoughts on the art style:
“I just watched an entire art presentation for the show. I’ve seen the sets and the environments, and I just saw my first glimpse at a world of supernatural characters as realized by our brilliant creative team. All I can say is the work is being done as we speak. It’s in what we call full development. Scripts are being written, art is being created, and it’s a great time to be a Ghostbuster.”

As for the franchise’s future on the big screen, little is known about what’s in store for the Spengler family. Frozen Empire limped its way to $202 million worldwide on a $100 million budget. Critics were largely negative on the sequel while audiences mostly leaned on a positive reception. Kenan hinted to Entertainment Weekly how the unleashing of spirits in Frozen Empire’s ending sets up the next chapter:
“In terms of where else this goes, look, we really care about the characters in this film. We feel like there is more story to be told. And I’m really hoping audiences connect with the adventure that the Spengler family goes on in this film. And if they do, then I really hope that we can continue this story.”
