New J.R.R. Tolkien Book The Fall Of Gondolin Hitting Bookshelves This Year

Author J.R.R. Tolkien may be 45 years in the ground, but he’s still apparently a lot more productive than many folks out there. EW is reporting that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is set to publish a new tale in the form of The Fall of Gondolin.

The Fall of Gondolin will be a new unpublished story that takes place in the beloved fantasy world of Middle-Earth. Those who have indulged in The Silmarillion may recognize the name, as it was referenced in the book. Here’s how EW describes the story:

“During the years that the dark lord Morgoth (Sauron’s predecessor and mentor) reigned supreme in Middle-Earth, his fellow godlike Valar refused to intervene against him on behalf of the peoples of Middle-Earth. Only Ulmo, the Lord of Waters, worked in secret to help the Noldorin Elves. The Noldor stronghold is the beautiful city of Gondolin, built to be undiscoverable by Morgoth’s forces. Ulmo guides a man named Tuor (cousin of the doomed Turin Turambar) to Gondolin, where he grows into a great hero and marries Idril, daughter of Gondolin’s King Turgon. Soon, however, Morgoth finds Gondolin and his armies lay waste to the city in one of the most epic battle scenes Tolkien ever depicted (including, among other things, the noble Elf Glorfindel dying in battle against a Balrog). Tuor and Idril are among the few who escape, along with their with the child Eärendel. That half-Elf, half-human child will go on to have a great destiny. “

From the sound of it, this story wasn’t actually written by J.R.R. Tolkien, but was put together by his son Christopher Tolkien, based on the outlines from his father. All the same, this is another dip into the world that made fantasy the juggernaut in fiction that it is today. But that’s not all. The book will also have drawings and color plates from the legendary Alan Lee, whose Oscar-winning art direction was instrumental in making Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films what they were.
