The Juggernaut has always been my favorite character to come out of the X-Men. He debuted for Marvel Comics back in 1965 in X-Men #12 and was created by the legendary team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Cain Marko aka The Juggernaut is well known for being one of the strongest and most powerful beings on Earth. Although living in a world of mutants and the step-brother of Charles Xavier, Juggernaut’s powers come from the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak and not from a mutation, which for the most part has not been an issue with going toe to toe with the X-Men or whoever decides to get in his way.
That will all change this May when Marvel Comics releases a new five issue mini-series titled Juggernaut, written by Fabian Nicieza with artwork by Ron Garney. You can check out the cover to the first issue by Geoff Shaw down below! In this series we find Cain Marko trying to find his place in the Marvel Universe, especially now that Jonathan Hickman has changed the status quo with House of X and Powers of X. We need to keep in mind that he is technically not a mutant, so he can’t be part of that mutant only nation of Krakoa. The series will explore how he reacts and handles this exclusion.
“That basically instigates the entire story. Having been X and lost, what does Cain become now? After years of back and forth and madness and sadness, he had become a member in good standing of the X-Men, and then while he’s away dancing in Limbo, mutantkind gets everything they could have ever hoped for… and Cain can’t be a part of that,” Nicieza said during an interview with IGN. “How he reacts to that rejection becomes the exploration of who he is going to become without the one thing that — for good and bad — has defined him for most of his life.”
Along with this interesting story-line, we are also going to be introduced to a new mutant named D-Cel, who will be joining Marko on his journey. Her name is a big hint to her abilities which have to do with decelerating powers. This of course is opposite of Marko’s so it will be interesting to see how they work together, a partnership that Nicieza compares to a very well known Game of Thrones partnership.
“She’ll adamantly tell you she’s not a mutant, and her personal life is a mystery because she wants it to be,” Nicieza said of the new character. “She’s a fifteen year-old kid living with other homeless squatters in Manhattan buildings that were abandoned after the War of the Realms. After she meets Cain in issue #1, she becomes the catalyst towards helping him see a purpose to his new life, and if it gets her more views on her RoxTube channel, that’s just a bonus. I wanted a bit of an ‘Arya and the Hound’ dynamic to their relationship, and she appears at his side for the whole series. I like her, even though she’s one of those adorably annoying types with their cell phones always in your face looking for real-time validation for themselves and for you.”
JUGGERNAUT #1 (OF 5)
Written by FABIAN NICIEZA
Art by RON GARNEY
COVER by GEOFF SHAW
READY OR ‘NAUT, HERE HE COMES! A mystic gem. A force of overwhelming power. Nothing can stop the Juggernaut. Except himself. Another building falls. Cain Marko is done letting others pick up the pieces of the things he’s destroyed. Renowned X-scribe Fabian Nicieza (X-FORCE, DEADPOOL) and celebrated artist Ron Garney (CAPTAIN AMERICA, DAREDEVIL) team up to take the unstoppable in a new bold new direction!
Also new in this series will be Juggernaut’s armor, which I am very excited to see. Given the introduction of D-Cel and the interesting story line that sees an excluded Juggernaut, I think five issues may be a little short to tell a good story. I am very interested to see where this mini-series leaves off the Juggernaut and D-Cel at the end.
