Yesterday, Lionsgate released the second trailer (or first trailer, if you consider that first one a teaser) for their upcoming film,Saban’s Power Rangers. This is a movie that was highly questionable for both Power Rangers fans and mainstream moviegoers. Would they be able to make the whole idea of Power Rangers palatable for the current general audience? More importantly, would they be able to do it in a way that didn’t betray the tone and style of the source material?
The first teaser we got a few months back was definitely a good first step in the right direction. Admittedly, the more hardcore fans of the franchise likely felt a bit betrayed by it. As cool as it was, it didn’t necessarily feel like Power Rangers. Many outlets — us included — pretty much agreed that the film had taken a page out of Chronicle’s book (though, ironically, they’d ousted Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis from the project pretty early on).
With the second trailer, however, they seemed to have quieted those worries as well. Not only did it seem to retain that Chronicle feel, but it also injected it with an amped up version of the fun tone shown in the original series — minus the more cringeworthy moments. Now, on the heels of that great trailer, Lionsgate has now shared a batch of hi-res photos.
Check them out below!
In the photos, you can see a close look at Rita Repulsa, the Rangers, the back of Alpha 5’s head, and Zordon.
Zordon is likely the big takeaway here, as his look was one of the bigger head scratcher of the trailer. For better or worse, it looks like one of those pin boards that you pressed your hand (or face) against when you were a kid. It seemed so futuristic and fun at a young age, but here, we still can’t decide if it looks silly. This may be one of those situation where some actual story context is needed to buy it.
Regardless, the film still, as a whole, looks like a great deal of fun. Do any of these images do anything for you? Let us know in the comments down below!
