New The Wheel Of Time Season 2 Plot Details Ahead Of Premiere

Today we are sharing a Wheel of Time Season 3 casting update, though it's only for some minor roles.

Following recent coverage in SFX Magazine, we have some new The Wheel of Time Season 2 plot details ahead of the premiere on September 1st. You might think it’s easy to get the plot details, given this is a book series. However, we know that the plan is to condense the 2nd and 3rd Wheel of Time books within Season 2. I’ve always said, I think this is a smart play, IF they pull it off.

Below is a transcript of some details shared within the September edition of SFX Magazine, which tells us a little more about the plot this season.

“Season two picks up five months after the events of Season 1 and covers major storylines that happen in parallel within the next two books: The Great Hunt (1990) and The Dragon Reborn (1991).”

We kinda knew this already as said above.

“The season opens with all of the characters experiencing a fresh start, independently discovering who they are without Moiraine in their lives. In the first episode, Nynaeve (Zoë Robins) and Egwene (Madeleine Madden) are novices in the White Tower; Perrin (Marcus Rutherford) is learning to be a tracker with his soldier friends; and Mat Cauthon (Dónal Finn) is forcefully indisposed. Rand is trying to blend into Cairhien, while Moraine plots.”

Analysis

These small Season 2 plot details allow me to get a glimpse into what’s been planned here. In the books, Rand and Perrin go on a journey together in Book 2. It seems like the show will instead give that portion of the story to Perrin alone. Meanwhile Rand can get more involved in his story from Book 3. At least, that’s how I’d guess it is going to work. What will be relatively new ground is Moraine and Lan’s part of this tale. Both characters have minimal page time in Book 2 and 3. They are present, just not to the same degree as the first book. Both come back as main characters in the fourth book, which will be adapted into Season 3.

As for Matt, it seems that there is a bit of a course correct happening from the Season 1 finale. As we know the actor who played Matt in Season 1, (Barney Harris) had to give up the role for personal reasons. He was therefore sadly not present for filming the final two episodes of Season 1.

Now that the role has been recast with Donal Flynn, it looks like Matt’s story will go back to where it should have been heading anyway. That’s a good sign, because Matt is 100% the most popular character in the books. However, it’s not really till Book 3 that Matt comes out of his shell as it were. Hopefully that means Book 2 Matt happens in the first few episodes and then we get to book 3 Matt within this season.

There is also a little information on where our main characters journey’s will go in Season 2, which I won’t include here for fear of SPOILERS. Just small teases mind. However, with very little time to go, I don’t see any advantage to spoiling story details at this point. If you fancy some spoilers for the story itself then the whole thing is all over the internet, go find out.

The producers also talked about their emphasis on “more action, more deep, nuanced character work, as well as strong imagery” and how “the disparate stories will pay off in a season finale that will take the series to new heights.”

Okay, but…..

Which Finale?

A final word from Executive Producer Marigo Kehoe:

“It’s still the books, but the journey will be slightly different to what is in the books. I love it. I think the second season is phenomenal. And then with all the characters back together, the next question is, where are they going to go next? Season three starts with a bang, that’s all I’ll say.”

So no surprises that by the end of Season 2 the main characters will all find themselves in the same location. The question remains, which location? You see, Book 2 ends with everyone in a place called Falme. However, Book 3 ends with everyone in a place called Tear. One thing fans have wondered is whether both these events will appear in Season 2. Alternatively, whether they will be merged into one event instead? I’m afraid we still don’t have an answer for that here. It’s also possible one of them could be a mid-season climax and the other the finale.

The Wheel of Time Season 1 was, decent enough, up till the very end. The quality dropped big time in the final two episodes. I hope those lessons have been learned and we get a consistently good Season 2, but that remains to be seen.

What do you think of the new The Wheel of Time Season 2 plot details ahead of the premiere on September 1st? Thoughts below as always.
