A new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s sword and sandals epic The Odyssey drops online and I do have a small critique about what we are shown. I’ll get to that in a bit. First, let’s look at the official ‘bumf’ from the press release.

‘Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX®film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX® film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.

The Odyssey stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o, with Zendaya and Charlize Theron.

The Odyssey is produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan for their company, Syncopy. The executive producer is Thomas Hayslip.’

Like most movie fans I’m excited for another Nolan movie. However, I guess this is also a genre where I feel a certain protectiveness towards. Whilst The Odyssey is not fantasy in terms of genre, it’s potentially the story that created the very idea of the fantasy genre. I mean, unless you really believe in the monsters and the gods all being real, in which case, you do you. Let’s just say we expect this story to be closer to 300 than Gladiator.

So my critique is in the dialogue we get in this trailer. Specifically the use, twice of the word dad instead of father. For me, dad is a modern word that we have created in English as a short hand term of the actual word which is father. I’m not that keen on contemporary dialogue in a sword and sandals epic. Both lines in the trailer would have sounded much better tonally if they were simply replaced by the word father instead. Go back and watch the trailer again, Robert Pattinson refers to Tom Holland’s dad issues in one scene and Tom Holland’s own line of “my Dad will come back”. Then simply replace the word father and you’ll agree with me it feels better.

Will this determine whether I like the film or not? Of course not, but it may remain a small annoyance of an otherwise excellent movie. Or, it could be another nail in the coffin for an adaptation I didn’t care for? I guess we will find out this July.
