Lanterns Showrunner Talks The Tone Of The Show

Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy talks the tone of the show and also addresses some fan criticisms of the trailers in a recent interview.

Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy talks the tone of the show amid recent fan  criticism of the trailer’s tone. Speaking with ComicBook.com, Mundy was asked if taking the approach of creating something less obviously geared toward the typical superhero style and more akin to other HBO legacy shows was a challenging prospect?

“It was less challenging than it was just exciting. Our take was that we have this incredibly rich mythology within the Green Lantern canon, and we have this incredibly rich history of Sunday night HBO shows—everything from The Sopranos to Game of Thrones and in between,” he answered.

“The fun of it was to try to create a real, layered drama that dealt with who these characters are as human beings while still staying true to the spirit of what makes the comics so special. We wanted it to be accessible for anyone who doesn’t know the canon but, at the same time, satisfying for people who know the lore in minute detail. So, yes, it was challenging, but only in the way that the most fun things are.”

Of course there are some DC fans who see it as too grounded and HBO like when what they were expecting was something more tonally similar to James Gunn’s Superman. That light tone simply doesn’t work for a series in my book and no, it doesn’t really fit with HBO’s brand.

I personally am looking forward to Lanterns and I’ll judge what I see when it drops. However, it is worth noting I am not much of a Green Lantern fan. Even as a kid I was rarely interested in Green Lantern comics. So perhaps some hardcore fans will point to my ignorance here. Either way, I’ll hope it’s a good show.

Lanterns will hit HBO in August this year.

What do you think as Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy talks the tone of the show? Are you not liking what you’ve seen from Lanterns so far (which isn’t much)? Thoughts below as always.
