Next PlayStation Console Release Window Revealed — And You’ll Never Guess What It’s Called

A few months ago at E3, Xbox announced that their next generation console would be released in November, though no official name. They also revealed what chips they’d be using and that the console will come with an SSD as standard. Until now, there was no official confirmation about Sony’s next gen console.

Today however, Wired.com published an article where they discussed Sony’s plans officially. It was revealed that the next PlayStation console will be called…wait for it…PlayStation 5 and has a release window of holidays 2020. In all honesty I’d expect this in late November to early December, just behind Xbox’s next effort.

Here is what Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan told the outlet.

“It’s nice to be able to say it. Like a giant burden has been lifted from my shoulders.”

I mean, what? A giant burden has been lifted off his shoulders by announcing the most obvious thing in the video games industry, that the next PlayStation will be called 5. Gimme a break Mr Ryan, I’m not having that at all. The article also details that the PlayStation 5 will use the same chips as the next Xbox, and also come with SSD as standard. So, exactly what everyone knew months ago when it came to PlayStation 5 then?

Honestly, apart from the odd little difference, we can pretty much say that the next Xbox and the PS5 will basically do the same things as one another with different UI’s. The only real difference between these two behemoths will be the exclusives, an area where Sony clearly came out on top in the current generation of consoles. Microsoft have bene buying up studios lately, but in reality it might take some time for them to catch up with the output of Sony in this department. However Xbox now has the Game Pass subscription which really does help to drive sales when you know you’ll get access to all Xbox exclusives on day one, along with hundreds of other games.

Like the last two generations, people will buy the console that has the exclusives that they enjoy most, and also the one all their friends are getting, or the one they have most brand loyalty with. The numbers, and whether one has a 1% power advantage over the other probably won’t be the driving force behind sales of these consoles.

For the full interview and all the little details, check the source article linked below, but the main points as said above, are that PlayStation 5 will launch in holiday season 2020 and have all the same cool additions as the next Xbox.

Where do you go next gen for your console needs, stick with the same brand, change, or jack it all in and plump for an expensive gaming PC? Leave your thoughts in the usual spot below.
