In case you didn’t know, Super Mario is officially 35 years old. That’s right. Nintendo’s prized plumber has been walking this green Earth for as long as many of us — for many, even longer! Over the course of his storied career, there have been many classics. Countless classics, really. From the original to Super Mario Bros. 3 to Super Mario 64, and so on. With the 35th anniversary of the brand, you’d think Nintendo would have fairly big plans in the works.
And you know what? Your ass would be right — at least according to a couple of corroborating outlets. According to Video Game Chronicles, in addition to many re-releases of older titles, we will be seeing some huge remasters. I’m talking about Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. One other outlet, Eurogamer, has confirmed the last title there as one that will be remasters.
But what does the word “remaster” mean? Does it mean the models will just be smoothed out and upscaled to HD? Most likely, if history is any indication. That being said, I’d really love if Nintendo upgraded the model, music, and controls to Super Mario 64. As great as that game is, its age is apparent, and I’d be interested to see what it would look like with a more modern polish to it.

If those standard Super Mario games aren’t your deal, then there was one other big one that both outlets confirmed. According to them, the Big N does plan on dropping a new Paper Mario game. Video Game Chronicles states there will be a 2020 release for Paper Mario, but Eurogamer only confirms that there is one in the works. Both also confirm a deluxe edition of Super Mario 3D World.
Given that there seems to be much ado about the 35th anniversary of Mario, I think there’s a good chance this is all true. And let’s not forget one other big thing: we still don’t have a lot of big titles confirmed for 2020. Nintendo has been very quiet in months past. Sure, we recently had a Nintendo Direct Mini drop, but there was very little to show for it, and 2020 is still a bit of a blank slate.
But will Mario actually fill that void? Personally, I’d likely only nab a few of those titles, but I know I’m a weirdo. Give me Paper Mario any damn day of the week though. Which title would you most look forward to? Let us know your thoughts down below!
