You may have heard this rumor buzzing around recently. However, the answer is no, Lucasfilm Animation is NOT shutting down. This all began by a report from Deadline around a closure that is connected to Lucasfilm. However, from there things grew unintended arms and legs. Here is what Deadline reported.
Lucasfilm is closing its Singapore visual effects and animation studio after nearly two decades, potentially leading to around 300 layoffs.
That is a far cry from the rumor stated above. Yet, here we are.
Check out what Joel Aron was saying on social media following this news. Aron is Lucasfilm’s director of cinematography lighting and VFX and a longtime member of the animation team.
Just to be clear, we’re not effected by this closure. LAL is not in Singapore 🙂 we’ve always been at either the ranch or where we are now in SF (or working from home!). We are still ferociously busy working with Cgcg to bring you all s3 of #thebadbatch and #talesofthejedi.

There is no drama here about The Bad Batch getting canned before Season 3, or Tales of the Jedi being dropped. As you can see, both are still in development.
We are not shut down. 🙂 Singapore is all ILM. *and fwiw, #Ahsoka is amazing.

Now, no one is saying its fantastic news that these people could lose their livelihood’s or that this studio is shutting down. It’s rough news for sure. However, the reaction online to this from either people not reading, or understanding the source article is crazy. That’s how online works, someone reads an article wrong, or just reads the headline, they complain and post the link, everyone who reads it assume the OP knows what they’re talking about. Then, as they have now not read the actual story, they pass on the false narrative citing the link as proof.
It’s crazy how often this happens on various social media platforms and it’s getting worse.

As for my own personal opinions on Lucasfilm Animation. I’m not the biggest fan of the animation style they use, and I hate that all their shows have an awful first season. But overall I like a lot of the content they put out.
