No More Call Of Duty Console Exclusives Going Forward Say Xbox

According to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, there will be no more Call of Duty console exclusives going forward.

According to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, there will be no more Call of Duty console exclusives going forward. As I’m sure you are aware the Xbox purchase of Activision was completed earlier this week. Whilst nothing will change for the imminent release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, next year it will be different.

Xbox has committed to releasing Call of Duty to all consoles, as happens right now. However, both Xbox and Sony has in the past purchased console specific timed exclusives. With COD being one of the worlds best selling games, and annual it must the crown jewels of exclusives. Perhaps these timed exclusives have been shown to encourage sales of a particular console? However, it has been some time since Xbox used this practice. Sony on the other hand have a deal in place with Activision for MW3 this year that must be honored.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has in the past bemoaned console exclusives. Spencer has repeatedly stated his desire to one day have no barriers to what console you need to buy. Desiring all games working on any platform. We are still a ways off that yet, but perhaps the timed exclusives war may be over? Spencer confirmed this week on an official Xbox Podcast that COD will have no console exclusives going forward. Which is a bit of a statement since they now own the IP.

“For Call of Duty players on PlayStation, and in the future Nintendo, I want you to feel 100% a part of the community,” he said. “I don’t want you to feel like there’s content you’re missing out, skins you’re missing out, there’s timing that you’re missing out on… that’s not the goal,” said Spencer. “The goal is 100% parity across all platforms as much as we can for launch and content. I say ‘as much as we can’ on parity because clearly some platforms have resolution and framerate differences, just based on performance, but there’s nothing else.”

Sony, nor Nintendo for now seem happy to return the favor. This does not mean we should expect to see Super Mario Wonder turn up on Xbox Series X or PS5. Though, who knows what the future may hold? Xbox has made Bethesda games so far console Xbox exclusives though though PC players can access. Will Sony or Nintendo be urged to reciprocate in any way? I seriously doubt it and Sony fought hard to prevent this takeover happening as they feared COD becoming an Xbox exclusive.

Legally it seems Xbox must release COD on PS5 for at least the next decade. After that I guess who knows?

What do you think as according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, there will be no more Call of Duty console exclusives going forward? Thoughts below.
