No Talk Of Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 Yet Says Ewan McGregor

Some Star Wars news this weekend as Ewan McGregor says that Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 ideas are being explored.

According to star Ewan McGregor there is no talk of an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 yet at Disney. Following Season 1 both McGregor and director Deborah Chow expressed their keenness to do it again. However, both also admitted there was no actual plan for it, or a story. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was also non-committal, which is unusual for her.

Speaking with Variety recently, partly regarding his Star Wars experiences McGregor confirmed there is currently no talk of a Season 2 over at Disney.

“I would love to do the second season, but there’s no talk of it yet. There is a lot going on at Disney.”

There is a lot going on at Disney. Mainly around rejigging what has been happening in favour of making some money off this franchise at the box office. One of my biggest issues with Obi-Wan Kenobi was that it looked too cheap in places. Compared to Andor let’s say, it was night and day. Yet Obi-Wan Kenobi was no low budget show, so economically it probably makes no sense to do what they did on Season 1.

There are of course other possibilities. For one we could get an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. However, I kinda get the feeling that would force them to try and top the series, that means Kenobi vs Vader, again…

I instead think the best idea would be to have a small scale character drama. McGregor excelled in the small moments within the show he was allowed to act. We could have a short series focused on Obi-Wan Learning an important lesson from Qui-Gon. They could actually get Neeson involved so the two can have a conversation. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon discussing what Vader has become and Qui-Gon insisting there is still hope for Anakin yet would be quite interesting. Whereas when we left Obi-Wan he was more of the opinion Anakin was dead, it would be cool to have Qui-Gon more positive, perhaps even knowing how it will play out? (Can Force Ghosts see the future?)

Oh and I can’t say I want to see Deborah Chow return as director. I had issues with the direction of that show, big issues. The Vader v Kenobi fore thing was just silly.

Qui-Gon could send Obi-Wan on some quest off-world. Hopefully one that has little or nothing to do with Luke or Leia. There is that network helping Jedi escape the Empire, he could help them and learn some lesson for Jinn along the way. The answer is to lower the budget and increase the drama. You can still have a few action heavy episodes, but in a season lasting only say 4 45 min episodes, that won’t cost a fortune if 70% of it is character drama.

Then again, perhaps it’s time to just say goodbye to Obi-Wan and focus on the new era’s of Star Wars?

What do you think of the situation as Ewan McGregor there is no talk of an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 yet at Disney? What, if anything, would you like to see from an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 that doesn’t cost the world? Thoughts below.
