It’s 2018 and pre-pandemic. All the hype on Netflix is surrounding Bird Box. The film did not disappoint by breaking streaming records. Now flash forward to 2020 and we are in the middle of Covid-19 where at some point in time feels a bit Bird Box-esque. Anyways, original author, Josh Malerman has written a Bird Box sequel novel which is set the release on July 21.
Bird Box Sequel: The Novel
July 21 brings the novelization of the Bird Box sequel titled: Malorie. The novel is named after the character Sandra Bullock wonderfully played in the original. As many will remember, Bird Box takes place during an apocalypse created by a supernatural power that causes individuals who look at it to go insane. Survivors try to navigate this new world with blindfolds. Malorie has the fortitude to fight for the survival of herself and two children. The sequel looks to pick up where the original ended. In an interview with Inverse, author Malerman states:
“Malorie opens at the school for the blind, which is where the movie ends. Then it jumps a few years later, and it really takes off 10 years after that.”
If you are a fan of the original then it looks like things will pick up right where they left off! There does appear to be quite a jump in time after that. I’m curious to see what happens in that decade. Do things get better? Does the supernatural force then come back?
Can We Expect A Bird Box Sequel Film?
So if there is a novel then there has to be a sequel film, right? Malerman comments on the idea:
“I can’t say much, but I can say that it is in development. Sometimes it’s weird, all this secrecy, but I’m game.”
I’m glad this looks to be happening. I mean, how could it not? With the success of the original and a sequel novel already in the books (see what I did there?) it seems like a no-brainer. The way Bullock brought Malorie to life is what inspired Malerman to write the second book, but her portrayal did not change his approach.
“It took about the same amount of time. I was also aware that there was a possibility that Sandra Bullock wouldn’t be playing Malorie. When you first start writing novels, especially now, how do you not see them cinematically? We grew up on movies. So with Bird Box, I always saw it cinematically. It almost reads like stage directions. It felt the same writing Malorie, but I didn’t have Sandra Bullock in mind when I wrote the first one.”
Although I respect his approach, I really hope Sandra Bullock reprises her role as Malorie. I struggle with recasting and think it would be odd to see someone else play the part.
