Octopath Traveler Ships Over 1 Million Units On Nintendo Switch

If you’re a Nintendo Switch owner, chances are you may have been hearing buzz about a little JRPG game called Octopath Traveler. The title is a turn-based one, and while it has the overall appearance of a Super Nintendo game, it seems to be pressing all the right buttons with many fans.

Both critics and fans alike have been raving about this one, and all that positive word of mouth seems to be working, as developer Square Enix has announced the worldwide shipping of over 1 million units for the title since its July 13 release date.

This is great news for fans of the Switch and great news for Square Enix, and could lead to more potential exclusives to the platform — though we’ll have to wait to see what the long-term numbers are.

As some gamers may have noticed, the JRPG genre is having a bit of a comeback. After all but disappearing during the PS3/Xbox 360/Wii era, some gamers seem to be hungry to travel back to a simpler time, where pixel graphics reigned supreme alongside turn-based battle systems. In recent years, games like Bravely Default, Persona 5, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 proved that there is still some steam left in this genre.

Square Enix has been hard at work putting theory to the test with some of their developers. Recently, they’ve been putting out Chrono Trigger-inspired JRPGs like I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear, but neither of those games seemed to hit the mark with fans, and personally, I found them to be lacking in the game mechanics department. Then, early last year, Switch owners were treated to a very special trailer that featured a very specific diorama-like graphical style.

Clearly, Octopath Traveler proved to be more than a visual gimmick, as its gameplay has also held up under long periods of gameplay. Have you had a chance to check out the title? Let us know down below!
