Oh, Hell Yes! Bad Robot Is Making A Supernatural Western Thriller — Sign Me Up!

I like me some genre mash-ups. I know these aren’t the kinds of movies or stories that sell, but man can they be fun a lot of times. And I love me a good Western. Sadly, I’m not even talking about the really serious, character-driven ones. Nah, those tend to be way too serious for my taste. I’m talking about the balls-to-the-walls ones like The Good, the Bad, the Weird, and while I haven’t necessarily been hungry for an action-heavy one, I have been eager to see someone else bring a unique story in a Western setting.

As it turns out, the film gods have been smiling down on me and inspiring F9: The Fast Saga writer Daniel Casey. THR is reporting that Warner Bros. has picked up The Pinkerton, a spec script from Casey for J.J. Abram’s Bad Robot production banner. This film will mark the first put out by Bad Robot since they signed a new overall deal with Warner Bros.

Per my enthusiasm, The Pinkerton is being described as a “supernatural revenge thriller in what sources say is a Western setting.” And by Pinkerton, we’re talking about detectives from the agency of the same name that apparently got started in the mid-1800s. As such, I expect we will be detecting with some guy in a Western setting in a situation that turns…supernatural.

Casey is no stranger to Bad Robot. Several years back, he worked on the 10 Cloverfield Lane rewrite, and that ended up being quite the tense little movie. If he can bring that same tension to this new movie, I expect we’ll have something pretty darn cool on our hands.

But what will the story be about and how will the supernatural element be brought in? That’s my number one question here. Will it be a supernatural element that’s front-and-center to the story, or is it intended to be something of a surprise? I obviously have no clue, but I love the idea of there being an original high-concept idea for the big screen. In an age where studios are afraid to take gambles, I hope this one is good and inspires all sorts of other fun ideas.
