When James Gunn Will Start Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Work

James Gunn is a busy dude. After being fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Warner Bros. was quick to bring him work. He ended up signing on for The Suicide Squad, a reboot of the franchise set in the DC Extended Universe. Not long after that, he was re-hired to take on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While it may have been quite the terrible experience initially, he very quickly became the winner of this whole debacle, making him the one director to concurrently straddle both the DC and Marvel cinematic universe.

This has made fans wonder just how he would juggle the workload of these two mammoth movies. Of course, Hollywood is no stranger to directors working on two concurrent projects. In the case of many big filmmakers, you have directors sign on to direct a script who hop onto another project once their initial one hits post-production. This leaves a lot in the hands of the editors, with the directors not having to micromanage the creative process — especially if they’ve worked with the post-production team before. But is that how Gunn will work?

One fan asked for clarification on when he’d jump into Guardians of the Galaxy after The Suicide Squad, saying, “When you’re saying you’re starting work on Guardians 3 after you’re done with Squad, does that mean you’ll begin pre-production or will pre-production begin during Squad‘s post-production?”

In essence, the fan was asking if the post-production of Squad would overlap with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn clarified.

“Basically I’ll finish post production before I start pre production,” Gunn responded.

So, in essence, he will not be pulling a Steven Spielberg. He will be riding out the entire creative process from script to screen, rather than leaving a lot of power in the hands of the editor. Of course, this is neither a good or bad thing, but just a different way of doing things. That being said, it does seem to be the way that filmmakers with more personal movies would work.
