Haroula Rose Makes Her Directorial Debut With Once Upon A River [Exclusive Interview]

Once Upon A River has been a success at various film festivals, including Europe. Winning a total of 19 awards as of today. The architect of this victorious story comes from the first time screenplay writer and director, Haroula Rose. 

Here’s the synopsis of the film:

Based on the best-selling novel by Bonnie Jo Campbell. Once Upon A River is the story of a Native American teenager Margo Crane (Kenadi DelaCerna). In 1970s rural Michigan who after enduring a series of traumas and tragedies, serts out on an odyssey on the Stark River in search of her estranged mother. 

On the water, Margo encounters friends, foes, wonders and dangers; Navigating life on her own she comes to understand her potential, all while healing the wounds of her past.

Before Once Upon A River, Haroula Rose had written and directed short films. Including Wedding Dress, Baby Crazy and Our House of Glass to name a few. 

Rose has been a singer and songwriter for over a decade and has toured all over the world. She has held residencies and has contributed to compilation albums. Some of her songs can be heard in television series such as American Horror Story, Still Alice and How I Met Your Mother among others.

I had a delightful Zoom conversation with Haroula Rose to discuss her directorial debut. She shared what it was about the novel that attracted her to write her first screenplay and the challenges while filming. Rose talked about how she incorporated her upcoming single, Rachel’s Song and her new album, Songs for Beginnings out October 15th.
