One Piece To End In 4 To 5 Years, Says Creator…Again

Pretty much every year or so, there’s a new report on how long it’ll be until the long-running manga One Piece comes to an end. For decades, author Eiichiro Oda has stated that he originally planned the story to run about five years or so. It’s been over 20 since then, and its inevitable end is still one big fat question mark. Just how many years do we have left?

Just last September, Oda revealed that the story would end within the next five years or so. Given how things have shaken out, though, is that a number we can trust? Well, let’s look ahead to today. Eiichiro Oda appeared on an episode of the Arashi band’s a la tubo variety show. When asked about how many years are left, Oda stated four or five years, which doesn’t put it much less than last year.

Of course, we have to note that there have been some changes. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to delays. Over the past couple of months, we’ve seen chapters virtually every other week. With that in mind, Oda may actually be taking those kind of delays into consideration.

Then again, he may not be and could just be pulling a number of a hat. But, in the interview, Oda did state that “we have to talk about everything every time my editor changes.” That likely means that he’s had to run through the remaining plot several times now. So, as he approaches the ending, he may have a better idea of the story to come going forward.

Or not.

We really just don’t know. While Oda does seem to be going toward a big endgame with the Wano arc, there are still plenty of loose threads fans are anxious to see pay off. Can One Piece pull it off without shortchanging the story? We’ll have to wait and see!
