Overwatch And Diablo Could Be Getting The Streaming Animation Treatment, And I Couldn’t Be More Thrilled

I love animation. I’m kind of an animation whore. I’ll be the first to admit it. I grew up on a diet of Disney and anime, and that’s something that’s definitely shaped my taste. So when shows like Masters of the Universe and Castlevania were given the sort of anime-style of series, I was thrilled. And I wasn’t just thrilled at the prospect of seeing more 2D animation, but at the prospect of seeing serialized animation that focuses on adventure more than jokes. Let’s face it, up until recently, the U.S. animation stuff was generally restricted to kids shows or adult comedies. Not a lot of in-between in terms of the genre. With Castlevania being released to such consistent fanfare, it’s only fitting that we’d be getting more animated video game shows. Now, we have hints of a Diablo and Overwatch series.

This rumor comes thanks to the co-president of Activision Blizzard Studios Nick van Dyk. It’s worth remembering that he also produced the Netflix animated series Skylanders Academy. Anyway, van Dyke Linkedin profile was a bit of a smoking gun. In his job descriptions, he labels himself as an executive producer on Diablo, “a TV adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s IP, rendered in anime style. The show is currently in pre-production for distribution worldwide through Netflix.”

I think that one pretty much speaks for itself. And then there’s a line later on that states that he “developed and sold an animated series based on Blizzard’s Overwatch franchise.” There are no further details as to what the animation style could be for that one, but given that there have been shorts produced in a CG style, I’d say it’s most fit for that.

Personally, I couldn’t be any more excited about this. As I’ve mentioned before, I bow at the altar of animation. More often than not, animated stories are able to tug at my heartstrings a lot more, and I just enjoy the process that goes into actually getting them made. The fact that we’re getting legitimate fantasy and adventure shows with serialized plots is also perfection.

There’s a reason why I took to anime back in the late-90s. It was back when most shows weren’t serialized, and therefore, an epic story wasn’t really possible. Now that these properties can be realized in a big way is something that 15-year-old me could only dream of.
