Ozark Showrunner Talks Spin-Off Possibilities After Series Finale

Ozark Showrunner Talks Spin-Off Possibilities After Series Finale

The final Season has come and gone, and now the Ozark showrunner talks spin-off possibilities. Chris Mundy spoke with TVLine following the final Season conclusion of Ozark and was asked about whether the show could spawn any spin-off series? It seems pretty clear that the story of the Byrde’s is over for now after the Ozark finale. However could there be other stories set in the same Universe?

Warning that Mundy does mention quite a big finale SPOILER for Ozark here. So If you have not yet watched the final season, be wary of this and maybe check it out afterwards?

“It’s definitely something that people have talked about a bunch,” Mundy said. “There’s nothing definitive. We’re lucky that people seem to really like the show so there’s obviously going to be some interest there.”

“There are still ways to stay inside the show and revisit things,” Mundy continued. “I’m sure people probably would’ve been happier if Ruth was out there.”

“It was really important for me to end this show,” he added. “This is the work we did, we did our best and we hope people like it. And then anything that spins off from it would be its own distinct thing, even though it’s in our universe.”

For me a Ruth centric series, despite her being the best character on the show wouldn’t have worked. Ruth’s arc is complete in Ozark and her eventual death is important to what Ozark was really about. Ozark was a show about how people with influence and power can get away with anything.

If the Byrde’s can make people money, they can always find a sponsor. However the body count the Byrde’s caused along the way is staggering, and Ruth was the final nail in that coffin, The Byrde’s are irredeemable. Yet, they will keep surviving long after those with stronger morals have fallen in their path.

As for whether I’d like a spin off? I’m not sure. I had a few issues with how that final season went down for a start. This didn’t have a great ending like Breaking Bad did, but I still enjoyed the show overall. I did however feel like the popularity of the show pushed the writers to try and cram far too much in. That final season was just crisis after crisis with no time for respite and reflection.

Equally the Byrde’s are the story of Ozark. I’m not sure where they could go outside of that family? Then again, I thought the same thing about Better Call Saul and that ended up being just as great as its parent show Breaking Bad.  However I’m also sure the popularity of Ozark will push Netflix to make sure some kind of spin-off happens even if it’s not the best idea.

What do you think of his comments as Chris Mundy Ozark showrunner talks spin-off possibilities? Did you enjoy the ending of Ozark, would you want more stories set in that same world? Thoughts below as always, or hop over to Discord if you like.
