Paramount+’s Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies Unveils Teaser Art, Trailer, and Cast Diversity | TCA 2023

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies

In one of the latest trends for streaming services, musicals are making their way into this blossoming industry. From Paramount+, the streaming studio introduces Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, a follow-up to the popular films that starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John back in 1978.

The streaming service revealed a teaser trailer that returns audiences to the 50s.

The panelists at the critics’ gathering included Marisa Davila (Jane), Cheyenne Isabel Wells (Olivia), Ari Notartomaso (Cynthia), Tricia Fukuhara (Nancy), Annabel Oakes (showrunner/executive producer), Alethea Jones (director/executive producer), Jamal Sims (choreographer), and Justin Tranter (executive music producer.

“Grease is absolutely perfect. I’m not interested in dragging this down,” said showrunner Annabel Oakes. “Then I thought about Grease and how it meant to me as a kid and the unanswered question. I always loved those Pink Ladies. They were these tough girls that had to stick together. We got really excited into the world of Grease and telling these stories.”

One big difference with this musical series that the panelist addressed will be the cast diversity that contrasts itself with the picturesque 1950s. For this cast, a Latina, a lesbian, and a post-World War II Japanese-American are represented.

“This is a love letter to the 1950s. Also, this is a love letter to those who didn’t get the screen time back in the 1950s,” said actress Ari Notartomaso.

The series is also set up four years before the original film with thirty original songs with Justin Tranter as the executive music producer.

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies premieres on Paramount+ streaming service on April 6.
