Phil Lord, Chris Miller To Develop Marvel TV Universe For Sony

You remember that surprising gem last year, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that geniuses Phil Lord and Chris Miller produced? The movie was able to snag an Oscar earlier this year, and it really proved that Sony could still do some creatively-fulfilling stuff with the Marvel characters under their belt. Now, get ready for more Marvel stuff from Sony, because it’s coming whether you like it or not.

According to THR, Lord and Miller have signed a new five-year overall deal with Sony Pictures TV. This is a reported nine-figure deal and it will have the duo create and develop comedy and drama projects for the studio. But the key news here is that they will also be involved in the development of “a suite of television series” from Sony’s Marvel characters.

“This is a significant milestone for our television business, having the opportunity to work with two of the most creative forces in the industry in both our film and television businesses,” SPT chairman Mike Hopkins said. “Building on our strong IP and creating new franchises has been a key focus for SPE, and the best way to do that is to invest in remarkable storytellers like Phil and Chris. We are thrilled to welcome them to the SPT family, and I want to thank [SPT co-presidents] Jeff [Frost], Chris [Parnell] and Jason [Clodfelter] for all their hard work in pulling this deal together.”

“We are so grateful to everyone at Sony Pictures Television for choosing to partner with us and expand our enduring relationship with the studio,” Lord and Miller said in a joint statement Monday. “Together we aim to make groundbreaking work of the highest quality and integrity, and to place that work in convenient proximity to your eyeballs and earholes, wherever you may be.”

From the sound of it, the duo will be making series based on characters from the Marvel films they are producing. Projects spun off from Venom, Black Cat, and Morbius seem like a possibility. Also not off the table are series featuring characters from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The details are still sparse, though while I’m a bit disappointed that Sony is continuing to try to exploit Spider-Man, having Lord and Miller in charge is by no means a bad thing. What do you think of this news? Let us know down below!
