Has the PlayStation 5 Price Point Just Been Revealed?
For months, gamers have been speculating about how much the next generation of consoles will cost. By and large, over the course of the past few generations, I think we’ve learned a lot. We’ve learned that $600 USD is a substantial obstacle for most fans. As such, Xbox One’s and PS3’s original $600 price point led to a lot of sales going to their respective competitors. Yes, there were a lot of other factors, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Xbox 360 and PS4 were the cheaper consoles and respective winners of their generations
However, the lower side doesn’t necessarily equate to sales. Nintendo Switch may be doing well at its $300 price point, but the GameCube launched at $200. Then again, that was in a generation whose top prices were $300, so it was clearly a different era.
Anyway, when it comes to the upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles, the two price points being tossed around are $600 and $500. Many are pointing to the Xbox Series X starting at $600 and the PlayStation 4 starting at $500. Of course, this is all just speculation based on previous generations, but those are the two prices I assumed would be in place. Furthermore, each console would have a version with twice as much hard drive space at $100 more.
So, What’s The PlayStation’s 5 Reported Price?
We have a new piece of news from Play N Trade — a Canadian retailer. According to their Facebook page, they are taking preorders at 50% under the assumption that the price will be $559 per console. That roughly equates to $400 USD. That’s right, $400. That’s roughly $100 less than many were pegging the console to get launched at. That would go a long way in justifying their strange sub-terabyte storage base model. That would likely mean you could get one with nearly 2 terabytes for $500.

Of course, none of this is confirmed at this point. For all we know, this could be them just speculating based on insider knowledge. At the end of the day, it could be a random price point they settled on in order to get preorders up during the pandemic. That part is pure speculation on my part, but it is an interesting thought. It’s this thought that has shaded my perspective here.
Is This Price Point Bogus?
On the Facebook page, they never confirm specifically that this is the price point. When asked about if pricing changes, how can they guarantee the preorders are being set up at 50%, they only stated that it will be adjusted at the final sale and that they are refundable at any time. If I were a betting man, I’d say they wanted preorder funds and low-balled the price so that they wouldn’t end up over-charging for pre-orders. For example, if they set the price at $700 and it end up at $600, they’d likely get a lot of customers complaining they put down more than 50%.
So, as far as “rumors” go, I have put this one at a low likely rate. Yes, it’s always possible that this is the price point, but I don’t think this is a smoking gun. I think Pay N Trade is likely just getting the ball rolling so they can get money now and are ready for the holiday season.
