Fantastic Fest is the place to be for some amazing films. As we gear up for world/west coast premieres there are many films to consider. What is interesting is that some are new and some are being resurrected and restored. Such is the case for the 1981 horror film Possession.
Possession was originally released back in 1981 and is now receiving the 4K restoration treatment. This week, the newly restored film Possession by Andrzej Żuławski will be making its world premiere at Fantastic Fest. This will take place on Saturday evening at the Alamo Draft House South Lamar. You can check out the trailer below!
The film looks very much of its time but very interesting. I’m excited to see some of Sam Neill’s early work from the 80s. It seems to be a slow burn that promises to deliver a big payoff. This being of course the possession of Anna. I am curious to see how the idea of what someone looks like possessed has changed over the decades.

Here is the synopsis for Possession from Metrograph Pictures.
Banned upon its original release in 1981, Andrzej Żuławski’s highly choreographed nightmare of a marriage unraveling is an experience unlike any other. Professional spy Mark (Sam Neill) returns to his West Berlin home to find his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani, in a role that earned her Best Actress at Cannes) insistent on a divorce.
As Anna’s frenzied behavior becomes ever more alarming, Mark discovers a truth far more sinister than his wildest suspicions. With its pulsating score, visceral imagery, and some of the most grueling performances ever captured on screen, Possession is cinematic delirium at its most intoxicating.
Possession opens Theatrically and Digitally Exclusively at Metrograph on October 1st, 2021. In Theaters Nationwide October 15, 2021.
