UPDATED: Powerpuff Girls Show Coming To The CW From Greg Berlanti, Heather Regnier, And Diablo Cody

UPDATE: According to Variety, the series will follow the Powerpuff Girls as twenty somethings who regret their childhood spent fighting crime. But apparently, the world might need them now more than ever.

ORIGINAL STORY

The Powerpuff Girls is headed to the CW in live-action form.

The CW has long since been the live-action home from plenty of big comic and animated franchises. Of course, we have the DC characters Green Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl, among others. Beyond that, there are the likes of Riverdale who have taken up residence, going on to gain a unique fandom. But, if you thought they’d stop with those comic book characters, you are very much mistaken.

THR is reporting that The Powerpuff Girls is getting the live-action series treatment from the network. Of course, it is based on the Cartoon Network series of the same name, which saw three sisters created from a concoction of sugar, spice, and everything nice. They protect the citizens of Townsville from a series of ridiculous villains such as the ape Mojo Jojo.

The series is coming from mega-producer Greg Berlanti, who is best known for all the aforementioned DC shows. However, what’s more interesting is the duo set to work on the show under him. Writers Heather Regnier will join Diablo Cody in adapting the animated show for the world of live-action.

Regnier recently worked on the Veronica Mars revival series as co-executive producer, and before that, she also worked on shows iZombie and Sleepy Hollow. Cody is much closer to a household name. She broke out with the 2007 film Juno, and went on to write films like Ricki and the Flash and Tully. She also created the show One Mississippi.

The Powerpuff Girls is indeed a weird property to run with. Given its style, it’s so uniquely fit for animation, and I couldn’t imagine trying to tackle it in live-action. Still, as evidenced by those on board, there is a whole lot of talent to go around, so I can only hope it’s put to good use.
